An open letter to men from a difficult woman-Her story

Firstly, many of you are lovely. And I thank those of you who leave supportive comments on my Facebook page, or who engage in respectful and thoughtful debate. I very much enjoy interacting with you all. Please keep hanging around. Maybe you can share my site with your followers & others on facebook.?

But to the rest of you contemplating writing to me, I have a few simple guidelines. If your message falls into one of the below categories, please refrain from pressing send:

Personal attacks

It is fine to disagree with my point of view. My kids do it all the time! But if you wish to voice your disagreement, you will need to use words that convey your thesis in a logical methodical manner, and provide compelling supporting arguments.

Words such as “Your article contains factual errors A, B, and C,” or “You stated X but I can demonstrate with Y and Z that X is invalid,” do exactly that.

Writer Kerri Sackville.

To mansplain is to comment on or explain something to a woman in a condescending way. It is predicated on the belief that a man knows more than a woman, even about her own lived experience.

If you are a genuine expert on a topic about which I have written (and, if I am writing about women’s lived experience, being an expert includes ‘being a woman’), please feel free to comment. If not, refrain.

Speculation about my credibility

“No-one is interested.”

This is factually incorrect. Clearly you are interested, or you wouldn’t have read the article and taken the time to respond.

“Who the f–k cares what you think?”

Well, clearly you do. I know this because you are writing to me.

“Are you even a real journo?”

Well, the people responsible for the content of this publication (the “editors”) have paid me to write, so technically, yes, I am a real journo.

“Women do bad things too!”

Sometimes I write about certain poor behaviors exhibited by men. This does not mean I believe that women are perfect, or that women don’t do bad things too. It just means that I am writing about certain poor behaviors exhibited by men. If you want to write your own article about women’s bad behaviors, please do. Just do not send it to me. It’s irrelevant to my article.

Just because I write about certain poor behaviors exhibited by men, doesn’t mean I believe that all men exhibit these poor behaviors. You do not need to inform me. #Notallmen, I know.

Some of my articles run alongside a nice photo of me. I could have chosen a photo in which I look terrible (for example, one taken first thing in the morning, or whilst wearing a mud mask) but I prefer a pleasant photo.

Having said that, I do not need you to tell me how ‘sexy’ or ‘hot’ or ‘f—able’ I am in that pleasant photo. I am aware that it is a pleasant photo. Furthermore, I am a writer. I am trying to engage people with my words. When you flatter my appearance, you demean my work. Perhaps that is your intention. See point number 1.

When I was married I wrote about marriage. When I was anxious I wrote about anxiety. Now that I am single and dating, I write about being single and dating.

This does not mean that I accept propositions from random strangers on the internet. And if I did accept propositions from random strangers on the internet, they would have to be a hell of a lot better than,

“Hey I think you’re really hot so you should date me.”

Threats of violence

Most go straight to trash. The rest go to the police.

Thanking you in advance for your consideration.

With very best wishes,

Kerri (Nutty Left Feminist and Difficult Woman)

Kerri Sackville is appearing on a panel about ‘Difficult Women’ at Melbourne Jewish Book Week on Monday 7 May.

Just love your style Kerri. I love mentally strong, intelligent beautiful women.

Victoria Beckham may be the real icon for Girl Power – here’s perhaps why

(L-R) Ginger, Sporty, Scary, Posh and Baby Spice at Sydney Opera House during their 1997 promotional visit.

WHEN Scary, Baby, Ginger and Sporty Spice reunited on the red carpet five years ago, there was one noticeable absentee.

The Spice Girls were premiering their musical – Viva Forever! – and while Melanie B, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton and Melanie C arrived arm in arm, Posh Spice Victoria Beckham was nowhere to be seen.

Victoria was one of the last guests to arrive, dressed down in a pair of black cropped trousers and a trench coat. Clearly, she couldn’t care less. Without any words, she was sending a message, loud and clear.

Public disagreements with the girls in the past were no secret; she famously hated Geri (“it must be very lonely for her, I think you have to feel sorry for her,” she said after a bitter row over Halliwell’s shock departure from the group) and Melanie B has admitted that “Victoria was one end and I was at the other … it’s like any relationship with her and me. We fight, we argue, we make up … it’s always been like that.”

But this time, it was not quite the same. This time, it signalled a shift in power. And it hasn’t been the same since.

L-R: Spice Girls Melanie Brown, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton and Melanie Chisholm pose at the premiere of the Spice Girls musical “Viva Forever” — sans Posh. Picture: Leon Neal

Once upon a time Posh Spice was simply the pouty popstar in a PVC catsuit, the Spice Girl who slayed with a simple stare.

Along with Scary, Baby, Ginger and Sporty, Posh forced the world to spice up their lives and armed with a minidress and a microphone, introduced a generation to Girl Power.

“I was called Posh because I liked the nice restaurants, and the nice clothes, and that was my character. I didn’t smile, even in those days,” she said in the documentary, The Spice Girls Story: Viva Forever!.

“There was this very strong image. And I am very much that person, even now.”

The Spice Girls’ unapologetically brash brand of feminism took the world by storm and blazed the trail for dozens of icons to follow. The Fab Five’s first single Wannabe is still the best-selling debut single by a girl group of all time and combined, they’ve sold 85 million records worldwide.

Solo Spice: Victoria Beckham attends ‘Viva Forever’, without her Spice band mates.

Victoria Beckham was always considered the least talented member of the Spice Girls. Hers was the voice that lay deep in the background, the one given less solo time. For Victoria, success inside and outside of the Spice Girls never came easy.

“They used to turn it off [microphone] and just let the others sing,” Beckham told Vogue of her time in the Spice Girls.

Critics have also never been far from the 43-year-old fashion designer, model, and singer. The naysayers came from every corner. One minute she was “Porky Posh”. The next, “Skeletal Spice”.

“If Victoria hadn’t had the lucky breaks she had and the people having faith in her to make her what she is, she probably would have been singing and dancing on a cruise liner,” Victoria’s former Principal, Joy Spriggs, told the documentary, Being Victoria Beckham.

“There are lots of girls with more talent, I’m being quite honest here, that are doing less than Victoria is doing.”

The “skeletal” days. Victoria makes her debut for designer Maria Grachvogel at London Fashion Week in 2000.

Her solo career was equally disappointing – she is the only Spice Girl without a #1 solo single to her name. NME called her self-titled solo album, “a new low in shameless pop slaggery”.

The reviews came at a time when Girl Power was divided, at a time when the world was questioning whether Victoria Beckham should consider a career change and disappear completely. The knife was dug in that much deeper from bandmate, Sporty Spice Melanie C. Why chase a pop career so relentlessly when so encumbered by a lack of talent?

“If I was Victoria, I would enjoy my husband, enjoy my family, enjoy the money that they’ve got and give the music a rest,” she said in a British radio interview in 2004.

“She’s got such a great life – I don’t know why she doesn’t just sit back and enjoy it.”

Victoria’s self-titled solo album was a fizzer.

Not that Victoria cared.

Two decades since Spice Up Your Life, revenge has been served cold – and from the critics to the catwalk, Victoria Beckham is back on top.

“I got the last laugh – and now my mic is well and truly on, finally,” she told Vogue last year.

It’s no secret the success of any Spice Girls reunion now lies in the hands of the one Spice Girl who never seemed to matter: Posh.

Now worth a cool $450 million, Posh Spice’s success is the real lesson in girl power; never underestimate the underdog.

Beckham is riding high from the success of her fashion line; this week she celebrated her ten-year anniversary at New York Fashion Week, after inviting sceptical editors and buyers to a suite in the Waldorf Towers to see her debut collection in 2008.

“Victoria Beckham made her first appearance at New York fashion week a decade ago as a novelty act, but she leaves as a headline one,” writes The Guardian.

And once there was a sniff of success, how quickly the tide turned.

“The magic trick on which the Victoria Beckham brand is based is a sleight of hand. On the one is her relatable persona as a working mother of four, and on the other her aspirational level of polish and glamour. It is a compelling balancing act, and one which has made her a significant player in the luxury industry.”

According to the Telegraph, insiders say Victoria’s business enjoyed significant growth during the first half of 2017, thanks to a collaboration with Target and an Estée Lauder make-up deal.

In December, 2017, Victoria’s fashion business alone was valued at £100m (AU$176m), a far cry from Emma Bunton’s $30 million net worth. Meanwhile lawyers for Melanie B’s estranged ex Stephen Belafonte claim that Scary Spice had “wiped out all her Spice Girls money” – said to be £38m (AU$67 million).

“Victoria Beckham may be dismissed by many as less talented than her superstar footballer husband David Beckham, but behind the big sunglasses lies a cute business brain,” writes The Richest.

“Wag no more, Victoria Beckham is firmly out from under husband David’s shadow. Her fashion collections have won critical acclaim, along with a devoted celebrity following. Stars from Kate Winslet and Gwyneth Paltrow to Oprah Winfrey have worn her sharply tailored dresses, which carry four-figure price tags”.

Once the woman the Spice Girls could have done without, Victoria is now the woman the Spice Girls need.

Despite appearing alongside the girls in an Instagram post last week, setting the world alight with rumours of a reunion, she quelled rumours overnight, telling British Vogue: “I’m not going on tour. The girls aren’t going on tour.

“There’s something so strong in the message of what the Spice Girls stood for. What is that in the future? What does that look like? We were just bouncing ideas around. Brainstorming.”

After making a brief comeback in 2012 for the London Olympics and embarking on a World Tour that was cut short earlier than expected, Victoria has continually dismissed suggestions of a reunion. And she continues to play us all.

“It is not happening,” she said in 2017 amid rumours of a 20-year anniversary reunion.

“At some point you’ve got to know when it’s time. I don’t think I’ll be slipping into a PVC catsuit anytime soon.”

Despite hinting most recently at the idea that a reunion is ahead, the beauty for Victoria lies in the tease.

Despite the expectations that she should settle as a WAG and quietly step away from the spotlight and into her role as a dutiful housewife and celebrity mum, she kept working.

Even when her solo album failed and she was dropped from her record company, the same one that shot the Spice Girls to stardom, she kept going.

Even when her attempt to set up a life in Los Angeles and introduce the Beckham brand to the US with her one-hour TV special, Coming to America, failed miserably, she pursued her dream.

Victoria Beckham may be guilty of many things – excessive cosmetic surgery and a bad haircut or three – but despite being one of the world’s most underestimated performers, she has shown us all.

When she relocates her runway show from New York to London no doubt Girl Power will be sitting front row and centre. But while the rest cling on for publicity and a reunion, the one woman we all scoffed is ultimately, the last woman standing.

Now that’s Girl Power.

There is something to be said for the vintage feel of many so-called boudoir photo sessions. They can take virtually any person, regardless of all physical aspects, and turn them into something soft, sensual, and almost mysterious. Aside from the fact that most celebrities- on this list or not- are all of those things anyway, boudoir photos take it to the next level. Simply put, they ooze sex appeal, probably because they involve bedrooms, lingerie and/or full nudity, and a come-hither air made complete by the pouty lips and bewitching sort of look that seem to be typical of this sort of photo shoot.

Boudoir photography is no longer just for the rich and the famous. Increasingly, it is becoming something women do for a wedding gift for their fiancés/husbands, or something they do for themselves just for fun, kind of like a new and improved alternative to Glamour Shots (remember those?). And why not? These photos are fun, frisky, and can be tailored to each individual, using props or backgrounds or outfits to make each and every boudoir shoot unique.

Below I present to you 15 of the most beautiful women in Hollywood- both models and actresses- all of whom have engaged in one type of boudoir photo session or another. Their beauty and their bodies are highlighted by the nature of these photos, and I think that by the end of it, all of them will be even more attractive in your eyes, having seen them in this new yet classic light. I know they were to me.

1. Emily Ratajkowski

Emily-Ratajkowski-on-bed image

English actress and model Emily Ratajkowski is probably best known for playing Andie Hardy in Gone Girl (she was the student-turned-homewrecker who got with Ben Affleck’s character). But she has done more modeling than anything, which is perhaps why this boudoir photo of her (one of many to choose from) is so perfect. It is one of those things in life that is perfect because of its imperfections; this photo seems more real than a lot of the ones I came across. For example, Emily is not perfectly or overly made-up; she looks natural. The bedroom is not one from a fantasy, her hair looks really messy (not sexy-messy), and she is not even wearing uber-sexy lingerie, which like the imperfect being perfect, is actually sexier. Her silk top leaves more to the imagination, and her high-topped lace panties show off her curves and flat tummy. And that pose? Now that is worthy of one of the “perfect” boudoir shots, but I still like this one better.

2…Miranda Kerr

miranda-kerr-on-bed image

Guys seem to appreciate a woman who wears their shirt around the house… and nothing else. It is its own variation of less-is-more, if you think about it, and it totally works. Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr knows how to make it work for sure. Usually all dolled up and strutting her stuff on the catwalk, it is nice to see this more laid-back- but still very sexy- Miranda, sitting innocently in bed, wearing only a men’s button-up. Now a button-up alone may or may not be sexy, but the way she has it open, not one single button done, and is posing with her legs folded is quite enticing. The dimpled angel-face hails from Down Under, and she used to be a gymnast when she was younger, which may explain her awesome physique. But she is also scandalous; she released nude photos of her ex-husband Orlando Bloom onto the internet, so don’t mess with this chick!

3…Eliza Dushku

Eliza-Dushku-on-bed image

Now that is a come-hither little smirk if I ever saw one! Beautiful Eliza Dushku of Dollhouse fame certainly looks dollish in this boudoir pic. Her ringlets are perfect, and her bra, panties, and thigh-highs all fit perfectly, as if they were made for her body. Eliza wears a flattering amount of makeup- not too much, not too little- and seduces the camera with those eyes that are essentially pools of sex. Lying on some kind of very soft blanket, she looks very comfortable and as if she is beckoning someone to come join her for a frolic in the throw. Known for her throaty voice and playing confident characters, Eliza has always been a tomboy at heart, although you wouldn’t know it from this picture. But sexually speaking, she knows what she likes: “I love leather and it’s great to be a bad girl at times. But there is a time and a place for everything. When I’m with Grandma, it’s flowers, and when I’m out in town scoping guys, you know…”

4…Marion Cotillard

Marion-Cotillard-on-bed image

The fact that actress Marion Cotillard is French makes her all the more alluring, especially when she opens her mouth and that sexy accent comes rolling off her tongue. This dark-haired, blue-eyed beauty looks sensational in this photo, lying on peach silk and wearing black and animal-print lingerie. Her face appears unamused, but that is kind of the mood of the photo, don’t you think? Shiny curls, blood-red nails, shadowy eye makeup, sequined heels, and a pose to die for on the bed, this boudoir shot oozes sex appeal. She often plays femme fatales (in A Private Affair, A Very Long Engagement, The Black Box, Inception, Midnight in Paris, Macbeth, and The Dark Knight Rises) and it is easy to see why. But she is not a fan of doing love scenes. Marion says, “I was always reluctant to shoot love scenes…. But in Rust and Bone we had very naked love scenes, and it was totally different… The whole day I was naked on set and I was totally fine with it.” I wonder if she feels the same about a naked (or near-naked) photo shoot?

5…Kate Beckinsale

Kate-Beckinsale-on-bed image

A lot of guys have a thing for Kate Beckinsale, and the reason should be obvious. The Underworld actress is fiiiine. In this boudoir photo, she looks a little sassy, and all kinds of hot. The barefoot, bed-ready beauty is keeping with the theme of simplicity for her boudoir shoot, if you notice. Bright white light streaming through a wall of windows, white linens, a white, off-the-shoulder dress, wavy hair worn down, and minimal make-up are the key features of this photo, and yet all you notice is her face and her body, nothing else. It, like her, is gorgeous. Not surprisingly, Kate has been ranked highly on all sorts of hot lists over the years, such as Most Desirable Women, Sexiest Women in the World, and Hot 100

6…Ashley Olsen

Ashley-Olsen-on-bed image

The Olsen twins, whom Ashley Olsen is one half of, are known now for being kind of oddballs, quite contrary to their bubbly, cutesie image during their childhood and teenage years. We are used to seeing photos of them as adults that make them look more alien-like than the 20-something fashionistas they are. But in this photo, Ashley, while still looking a bit disturbed, is appealing in a way that is different from both the creepy and the cute ways she usually is. Who knows? Maybe it can be attributed to the fact that there is only one of her in this picture, but then there is also her petite, curled-up figure, unclothed from the waist down. And that disturbed look is also wistful, and musing, and preoccupied, as if she has something on her mind other than fashion, boys, or Mary-Kate. And that is sexy, much more so than her frock-wearing, bug-eyed, purse-lipped norm.

7…Laetitia Casta

Laetitia-Casta-on-bed image

French model Laetitia Casta looks like she is just waiting for her man to walk through the door; she is all dolled up and sitting on the edge of the bed looking oh-so feminine. The black of her unique lingerie contrasts her fair skin nicely, and the heels add to the length of her already impossibly long legs, legs that in this photo are just begging to be wrapped around a man. Her hair off to one side, a forlorn look on her gorgeous face, and the seemingly wistful strength that this photo portrays all add to the beauty of it, as does the brownish-purple filter that falls somewhere between color and black and white. Interestingly, Laetitia is known for her blue eyes, curvaceous figure, and brilliant smile, but in this picture, you can see none of these things. Nonetheless, it is just as charming as any of the others where those things are all evident. That is the mark of a great model, I suppose; to be able to convey all kinds of emotion and not only that which you are good at.

8…Kristin Kreuk

Kristin-Kreuk-on-bed image

Kristin Kreuk is mostly famous for playing Lana Lang on the CW superhero show Smallville from 2001-2009. The stunning actress, who is of Chinese and Dutch descent, poses for her boudoir photo wearing fishnets, heels, and an off-the-shoulder sweater that you know does not cover everything in front. Her pout, her curls, and her demure look all scream seduction. That she sits on the back of a sofa, in front of a cityscape backdrop, all in black and white, only adds to the feeling of this photo. Kristin has a few different boudoir shots out there, mostly in black and white, and all of them just as pretty as this one. In the others, she is posed just as suggestively, but on a bed and wearing black lingerie. As nice as they are though, there is something about this particular shot that is a little something different than the “norm” for the boudoir photo.

9…Kaley Cuoco

Kaley-Cuoco-sexy image

She can hang with the geeks on The Big Bang Theory, she can play a witch on Charmed, and apparently, she can be quite the temptress in a boudoir photo shoot, as well. I am so accustomed now to her snarky character of Penny on The Big Bang Theory that I never would have pictured her this way, but she is quite lovely. Tastefully done, this photo really brings out her features- the smooth skin, big eyes, shapely brows, and full lips that all work together to create her harmonious visage. Less is more, as they say, and in this case it is the truth. With only a sheet, and her hair pinned back, she wears only a pair of studded earrings, and because there is nothing else to focus on her but her and her alone, her beauty is a lot more obvious. It is one boudoir photo that is sexy, but not necessarily sexual.

red lips line

10…Isla Fisher

Isla-Fisher-on-couch-pose image

Everyone’s favorite red-head stuns in this simple yet elegant shot. Kind of smiling and kind of not, Isla appears relaxed, lying on a divan. Her milky white skin glows in the soft light, underneath a layer or two of sandy-colored dress. Her jewelry minimal, her hair messy-sexy, her chocolate eyes smoldering, this photo is all-around flattering of Isla, who most recently played Karen in the 2016 movie Keeping Up with the Joneses. That Sacha Baron Cohen is one lucky man to have this beauty as his wife, and upon seeing this picture, he or any man would likely have the urge to climb right in beside her on that plushy cushion. Unlike some models or actresses, Isla retains her kind face even when posing for a photo shoot, and even when the shoot is supposed to be an enticing boudoir one.

red lips line

11…Minka Kelly

Minka-Kelly-sexy-pose image

Minka Kelly is one of those drop-dead gorgeous women who is so pretty, people sometimes fail to notice that her body is equally worthy of awe. I love that in this boudoir photo, her body is the focus, as her face, while still beautiful, is essentially expressionless, giving the spotlight to her tan shape. The shadows play out well across her legs, toned stomach, and perky breasts, and the girly white lingerie helps, as Minka’s dark locks flow over her skin and the lace. In the background a bed sits waiting, not a main focus of the picture but just there so it is in the back of our mind. A wakeboarder and horseback rider, Minka says she knew she was not cut out for modeling (I beg to differ) because, “I’m too short. I’ve got a big butt. It wasn’t going to happen.” I think she would have done just fine, at least judging by this picture.

red lips line

12…Eva Mendes

Eva-Mendes-sexy-pose image

Cuban-American actress Eva Mendes is known for her curvaceous and buxom figure, and while this photo does not highlight her bust, her curves sure stand out. You would never guess by looking at this sultry photo that the woman in it used to want to be a nun! Shockingly, the beguiling figure in fishnets who appears almost mischievous, once wanted to do the work of God. That is, until she learned that nuns do not get paid. Then she moved onto her second choice- acting. It has clearly fared well for her, and now Eva is better off anyway, as she does not “believe in the institution of marriage”, something that would likely not have gone over well with the other nuns (or the big man upstairs). She has been dating Ryan Gosling for five years, and the two have two girls together.

red lips line

13…Yvonne Strahovski

Yvonne-Strahovski-sexy-pose image

Yvonne Strahovski is the second woman on this list who is from Australia, although her family immigrated there from Poland. The blonde beauty did a boudoir shoot, and she looks, as usual, absolutely stunning. The setting is an interesting choice, taking the theme of less-is-more to a whole new level, as the bed does not even have a mattress. Yvonne herself does not have any clothes, pajamas, or lingerie, but nor is she nude. Wearing what appears to be a black, long-sleeved leotard, earrings, and leopard-print heels of at least four inches, this is a different kind of boudoir photo, but it is beautiful just the same. Yvonne’s perfect body that we see here is the result of a lifetime of being a tomboy and being physical. In her own words, “I’ve been very physical my whole life. I went out hiking and camping for days in the Australian forest, and when I trained at drama school for three years, we did a whole lot on stage-fighting techniques. And I was a dancer for five to 18.” She also calls herself “pretty gross and crude.” You cannot tell by this photo, though!

red lips line

14…Angelina Jolie

Angelina-Jolie-sexy-smile-pose image

Often called the Most Beautiful Woman in the World, Angelina Jolie wows no matter what she is wearing (or not wearing) in any photo or photo shoot. That is obvious. Though her recent divorce from Brad Pitt has largely taken over gossip headlines this year, these photos from a boudoir-esque photo session when Ang was younger by 20 or so years deserve a little attention too. Just look at that radiant smile. She is modeling, and maybe faking it, but you cannot tell because she honestly looks happy. Wrapped in some kind of sheer, shimmery dress and perhaps in the middle of changing, this boudoir shoot was done in what looks to be a regular bedroom, albeit one with a vintage feel. There is nothing extraordinary about the photo at all, except that Angelina glows, and looking at it, it is hard to imagine she ever played dark characters at all, like Maleficent, Salt, or Mrs. Smith. Or that in her real life, she was a homewrecker (sorry; despite her global humanitarian efforts, I am and always have been Team Jen. But that is not to say Ang doesn’t look sweet, because she does).

red lips line

15…Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett-Johansson-bed-pose image

Everyone loves them some ScarJo, and she is undoubtedly beautiful. But in this boudoir photo, she almost doesn’t look like her. She retains her beauty of course, but she looks nostalgic, almost melancholy. That facial expression along with her short curls and dreamy eye makeup is a far cry from Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Jordan Two Delta, Lucy, or any of the other strong characters she has played. But here, dripping with diamonds, sheathed in a transparent lavender dress, her feet hugged by yellow heels, Scarlett is the blushing picture of the damsel-in-distress, romantic type. She looks more like her character of Griet in The Girl with the Pearl Earring or Charlotte in Lost in Translation than she does her upcoming role of Major Motoko Kusanagi in 2017’s Ghost in the Shell. Either way, however- coy or aggressive, demure or bold- everything suits her just fine.

Policing is one of the toughest jobs anywhere in the world with long hours, dangerous shifts and acting as the last line of protection between the general public and tyranny a lot of the time. Despite its perils, this job is held in high regard wherever you are in the world and is done by those willing to put themselves out there on the streets. However, even in this progressive day and age, there are very few women in Police forces (generally speaking) and so in this gallery, we celebrate those who have taken up the cause in whatever country they happen to be in.

pi spy glass line-image

Ranked as one of the best police forces in the world in one of the most peaceful countries in the world, the Austrian Police force, as it is now, was only formed in 2005 by merging the Gendarmerie and the Polizei into the federal Police Force. With about 12% women within the force, the Austrian police force has a relatively high female presence compared to many other countries and even has all female task forces in certain cities.>>>> MORE HERE

Bosnian refugee Monika Radulovic crowned Miss Universe Australia. A shining example of immigation gone right

Monika Radulovic celebrates after being crowned Miss Universe Australia 2015.

A Bosnian refugee whose parents fled their war-torn town with little more than “the shirts on their backs” has been crowned Miss Universe Australia.

Monika Radulovic, from Botany in NSW, was four years old when her parents left their home in civil war-embroiled Zavidovici.

“They literally left everything behind, they packed a small suitcase and fled,” the 24-year-old told Fairfax Media. “They arrived in Australia with nothing.”

The University of Western Sydney psychology graduate beat 34 others to the title at the fifth annual Miss Universe Australia pageant and will next represent Australia at the Miss Universe international final at the end of the year.

Speaking at the ceremony in Melbourne on Friday night, she paid tribute to her parents’ courage.

“My parents basically had just the shirts on their backs, so they are definitely my inspirations and my heroes so it’s great to do them proud,” she said.

Miss Radulovic told Fairfax Media that she and her newborn brother Stefan relied on charity from the local church and goodwill from their new neighbours while their parents, formerly a lawyer and an architect, struggled to learn English and find work after arriving in 1994.

Friday was doubly memorable for her parents as it marked the day they “finally” took complete ownership of their Botany home.

“It was such a special day for our family in so many ways,” said an “elated and shocked” Miss Radulovic who last year made an unsuccessful attempt at the title.

Women in the pageant were scrutinised in swimwear, eveningwear and questions and answers categories. Questions in the final round of the competition centred on social issues, including bullying, social media and governmental responses to violence.

“I hope in 50 years time we won’t be asking this question at Miss Universe Australia,” Miss Radulovic said in her response to a question about extremism posed by a judging panel that included Sydney neurosurgeon Dr Charlie Teo, Real Housewives Of Melbourne cast member Gina Liano and former Today show entertainment reporter Richard Reid.

Runner up was Queenslander Madeleine Cowe, 22, and Chanel Stewart, 19, also from NSW, was placed third.

Miss Radulovic, who joins former winners Jennifer Hawkins, Laura Dundovic and Jesinta Campbell, said she intends to claim the world title for Australia.

“I want to be a positive ambassador for Australia. I can’t see why we shouldn’t win – it’s not about me, I’m just the messenger.”

Besides Sydney, the only place she can see herself living, she added, was the Miss Universe apartment in Manhattan’s Trump Towers.

Esquire writer bravely deems 42-year-old women f-ckable

Long before there were listicles on the internet, magazine editors have devised the art of folding numbers into headlines to create intrigue.  And while women’s glossies tend to revolve around stories like “37 new winter looks under $500”, and “17 juice cleanses that won’t kill you”, the brains behind men’s magazines have focused their energy on a different kind of statistics – women’s sexual shelf life.

This month, Esquire writer Tom Junod has struck gold with his very own exclusive ‘numbers’ story. In the August issue of the magazine, Judod boldly declared it socially acceptable to sleep with 42-year-old women in 2014:

“Let’s face it: There used to be something tragic about even the most beautiful forty-two-year-old woman. With half her life still ahead of her, she was deemed to be at the end of something—namely, everything society valued in her, other than her success as a mother.

“ If she remained sexual, she was either predatory or desperate; if she remained beautiful, what gave her beauty force was the fact of its fading. And if she remained alone… well, then God help her.”

The story appears in the same edition that features 42-year-old Cameron Diaz wearing a smoking one-piece swimsuit on the cover, hinting at a brave future where (a very short list of) hot ‘early middle age’ women are no longer completely gross to sleep with.

According to Junod, the shortlist of acceptable 42-year-olds include: Cameron Diaz, Sofia Vergara, Leslie Mann and Amy Poehler. In case one is curious about what sparked this sudden liberation, Junod explains it thusly:

“Changes in sexual fashion are always mysterious. We assume that sex is a biological function, and therefore both beneath and

above the mere flutterings of style.”

Of course, men are not above succumbing to ‘mysterious sexual trends’. Just ask bromedy makers who gave relevance to ‘MILFs’ in today’s society, or the gossip columnists who pioneered ‘cougar spotting’ in the first place.

To make up for their advanced years, however, these female celebrities not only have to look beautiful but must also demonstrate a sense of humour about not being Kate Upton.

“It is no accident that every woman mentioned here has comic as well as carnal appeal, and entices with the promise of lust with laughs.”

Though above all, they mustn’t let their bodies go: “Of course, they have to work for their advantage; they have armored themselves with yoga and Pilates even as they joke about the spectacle. Still, what has made them figures of fantasy is not that they have redefined the ideals of female strength but rather their own vulnerabilities.”

But not all funny hot ladies would make the cut. Sarah Silverman (now 43), who hit back at critics for age-shaming, has apparently missed the boat to sleep with willing, trend-aware men out there.

Well, for Silverman and other celebrities who didn’t make it on Judnod’s f-ck list, there is always Tina Fey’s (now 44) wise words to reflect on: “I have a suspicion that the definition of ‘crazy’ in show business is a woman who keeps talking even after no one wants to fuck her anymore.”

Because here’s nothing worse than a smart older women who refuses to shut the hell up about her sexual status quo, right?
