It’s a scene many women will be familiar with, and photographer Rupi Kaur proved a point when part of her series about taboos and periods was censored by Instagram for “violating community guidelines”. Her response on Facebook went viral ?I know that some communities and cultures go out of their way to shun and oppress a woman on her period. I guess Instagram is another one of them. Their patriarchy is leaking. Their misogyny is leaking. We will not be censored.?

Samm Newman is a college student who used Instagram as a body positive platform. When she tried to log onto her account, she received a message telling her it had been deleted. Her crime? Posting a selfie of herself in underwear, and being a US size 24. Instagram issued her an apology.

When Scout Willis posted a jumper featuring two bare-chested women on her Instagram, she did not expect to have her photo removed. In protest, she walked the streets of New York to protest Instagram’s policy of removing images of female nipples. She posted the images to Twitter, where they were not censored.

Meghan Tonjes is a blogger whose belfie (butt-selfie) was removed from Instagram after being flagged by users. Tonjes believes the size of her derriere was the offensive content, just look at how many fitness models have accounts posing in thongs and g-strings!

Not even Rihanna’s star power could stop the censorship. She appeared on the cover of the French magazine Lui and Instagram removed the photo. This led to a major stand-off and saw the singer ditch Instagram for six months.

The 4th Trimester Bodies Project is a group of women who share images of their post-birth bodies and aim to reduce stigma. They post photos of breastfeeding and all body shapes. Their accounts were deleted multiple times without warning, some with up to 11,000 followers.

Their ads were banned from the subway only AFTER the word “period” was inserted into the copy. In other words, the use of the word “period” – The Voldemort of advertising caused this campaign to be pulled.
